Barbora Krejčíková Defeats Jasmine Paolini To Claim Maiden Wimbledon Title
A new champion emerged on the Centre Court at The Championship as the 31st seed Barbora Krejčíková defeated the 7th seed Jasmine Paolini in a tough 3-sets match 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in 1 hour and 56 minutes. The Wimbledon title marks Krejčíková’s second Grand Slam title after winning her first at the French Open in 2021.
Krejčíková started off the match with conviction and broke the Italian on the first game and maintained her high level to build a 2-break lead and served out the set to win 6-2. In the second, Paolini lifted her level to turn the tables, hitting and directing more balls to her opponent's backhand to gain a 2-break lead and served out the set to win 6-2, just as Krejčíková did in the first.
In the third, the level was close between the two until Paolini double faulted serving at 3-3, allowing the Czech to break and lead 4-3. They continued to hold their serves and Krejčíková served for the match at 5-4. She had to save two breakpoints before finally converting her third Championship point with a massive serve out wide.
Not the matchup that we were expecting but the ladies delivered their best tennis at the finals! Tough luck for Jasmine Paolini as she falls once again in the finals. However, there were many positives to take away from the miracle run on grass this season for the Italian as she has never won a tour-level grass tournament on grass prior to this year. Paolini is also the first female player since Serena Williams in 2016 that made finals at both French Open and Wimbledon in the same year.
It was an emotional win for the Czech as she claimed the Wimbledon championship, a title that holds so much meaning to her and her former coach and mentor, the late Wimbledon champion, Jana Novotna. She fought past injuries and worked her way back up the rankings. She had played quality matches against tough opponents at the Championships this year and is a well-deserved Wimbledon champion.
