Jannik Sinner Fill The Last Spot For The Quarterfinals At The US Open

The world number one, Jannik Sinner, defeated the 14th seed, the American home hope Tommy Paul to secure a spot in the last eight of the US Open. He won the match in straight sets, 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 6-1 taking 2 hours and 42 minutes. This means that Sinner, in the form of his life, made at least the quarter-finals in all four majors this season; he is just the eighth men’s singles player to accomplish this since 2000.

Jannik Sinner started on the wrong foot as he was broken early in the first set, trailing behind Paul 4-1. However, he started to play better, rallying the breaks back to level the match out 4-4, taking the first set into a tie-break, where Paul made several unforced errors allowing Sinner to take the set. The second set was less dramatic as both players held serves and decided the set with a tie-break which ended in a similar fashion as the first. 

In the third, Paul’s level dropped off slightly and Sinner took advantage, breaking serve early to lead 4-1, the American couldn’t find his way back into the game and with the last forehand long, Sinner secured the win. The Italian is set to play the number 5 seed Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals, a rematch of the Wimbledon quarter-finals in July. 

The US Open was full of upsets on both sides of the draw, most notably Carlos Alcaraz (3) and defending champions Novak Djokovic (2) and Coco Gauff (3) exiting the tournament before the second week. Daniil Medvedev is the only former US Open champion remaining in the men’s draw. With a draw this open, there could likely be a new champion in New York this weekend.
