Can Carlos Alcaraz End Daniil Medvedev’s Winning Streak?
Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev will make their maiden finals appearance at BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Sunday. Carlos Alcaraz fought past Jannik Sinner in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-3, having to save a set point and play a tie-break in the opening set, before gaining an early break in the second set to secure his spot in the finals.
Daniil Medvedev is on an amazing winning streak with 3 back-to-back titles and 19 consecutive match wins, including the semifinal win against Frances Tiafoe in straight sets 7-5,7-6(4) earlier today. Frances did not make it easy for Daniil as he saved 7 match points before ultimately losing to the former world No. 1 on the eighth match point.
The two former world No. 1 will meet only for the second time on tour. Daniil Medvedev leads their head2head 1-0, where he beat Alcaraz at Wimbledon in straight sets back in 2021. The upcoming finals is unpredictable as they haven’t played since then, and both players are in great form.
The court at Indian Wells seems to be more favourable for the Spaniard as it is a slower court much like clay, whereas Daniil prefers playing on a faster hard court. If Carlos manages to take advantage of Daniil’s deep return position and goes up to the net as much as he can, he is likely to come out on top.
They both will be looking to win their maiden Indian Wells Masters title and each has something to gain from the win. Daniil will be looking to match his longest winning streak and claim his 4th consecutive title on tour while Carlos will be looking to overtake Novak Djokovic and regain the top spot on the ATP Pepperstone rankings.
