Daniil Medvedev Wins First-Ever Title On Clay!
Daniil Medvedev wins his first-ever clay title in Rome against the young Dane, Holger Rune, in straight sets 7-5,7-5. This title marks his 20th career title and also the 6th Masters 1000 title. He will now overtake Novak Djokovic on the ATP Pepperstone rankings to move back up to world No. 2 and go into the French Open as the No.2 seed.
Medvedev started the 2023 season a little sluggish; however, after getting knocked out early at the Australian Open this year, he went on to win 5 out of the 6 finals he made.
He won 3 back-to-back titles in Rotterdam, Qatar and Dubai, followed by the Miami Masters. And now he won the Italian Masters on a surface he used to hate so much. Amazing run for Daniil this season - already 5 titles and a W-L record of 39-5!
Medvedev has adjusted to the red dirt well enough to win a Masters title. He will now go into the French Open as one of the favourites to win the title given the similarities of the surface and the track record of past champions where a number of the Italian Open champs went on to win the Roland Garros.
