Carlos Alcaraz Battles Past Jannik Sinner To Advance To The Semifinals At The US Open
On 8 September, the Spaniard no.3 seed Carlos Alcaraz played a grueling 5-set match against his rival, the Italian Jannik Sinner, who had defeated him in their last two meetings - at Wimbledon and the Croatian Open.
These two young men are said to be the future of men’s tennis at 19 years old (Alcaraz) and 21 years old (Sinner). They are expected to become long-time rivals as their careers progress. They are now tied 2-2 in their head-to-head stats!
The quarter finals match they played was a really high quality one, saving breaks, splendid winners and excellent net play. The 5-set match was one of the longest if not the longest match played at the US Open this year lasting 5 hours and 15 minutes.
After all the thrills on the court, with intense rallies, it was Carlos Alcaraz who managed to clinch the win and the ticket to his first semi-finals at the US open. Carlos Alcaraz won 3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (0), 5-7, 6-3 against no. 11 seed Jannik Sinner.
Carlos Alcaraz will now face Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals on Saturday at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Frances Tiafoe is the no. 22 seed who stunned the no. 2 seed Rafael Nadal and the no.9 seed Andrey Rublev to advance to his first slam semifinals since turning professional. He is also the only American left in the singles for both the male and female draw. All the players left in the draw have not won the US Open title before.
Frances Tiafoe currently leads their head-to-head stats 1-0. Let’s see if he can continue his streak and advance to his first Grand Slam finals at the US Open!
