Jannik Sinner Defeats Novak Djokovic Once Again
Just days after the Nitto ATP Finals match between Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner, the pair met again at the Davis Cup semi-finals. Only this time, Sinner got the better of Djokovic, defeating him in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. Jannik Sinner becomes the first person since Daniil Medvedev in 2019 to have defeated Djokovic twice in the season.
Team Serbia was in the lead after the first singles match when Lorenzo Musetti lost to Miomir Kecmanovic in three sets 6(7)-7, 6-2, 6-1. Sinner, with the fate of Italy on his shoulders, put up a great fight and managed to pull off the unthinkable - saving 3 match points before defeating the world no. 1 and levelling the playing field against Serbia.
Djokovic for the first time in a while looked lost playing the opening set, allowing Sinner to run off with a quick start. However, as always, he managed to catch up; although this time he was unable to turn things around completely.
In the third and deciding doubles match, Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego went on to defeat Djokovic and Kecmanovic 6-3 6-4 to secure a spot in the finals for Team Italy for the first time in 25 years!
Sinner joins Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal on the list of players who have defeated Djokovic twice in 12 days; both of them having done so in 2008. It has been a phenomenal season for the Italian as he ends his season on a high and will be looking to help Italy secure the win against team Australia at the Davis Cup Finals.
