Alexander Zverev Wins His First Title Of The Season On Home Soil
Alexander “Sascha” Zverev ended his 18-month title drought by winning on his home soil at the Hamburg Open in Germany for the first time in his career. Zverev is only the second German player since Michael Stich in 1993 to lift the singles title in Hamburg.
Alexander Zverev overcame the Serbian, Laslo Djere, in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 to claim his 20th tour-level title in an hour and 50 minutes; he did not drop a set during the whole tournament.
In their finals match, Djere managed to keep up with Zverev in the first set. However, his level dropped in the second, and Djere was not able to hold serve after breaking back to 3-4, giving Zverev a chance to serve for the match at 5-3.
This win is a highly emotional and special one for Sascha as it marks his first title since suffering a freak injury in which he tore all of the ligaments in his ankle during the semi-final match against Rafael Nadal last year.
Alexander Zverev is slowly working his way back to where he was before his injury last year. He still has some way to go but he is definitely on the right track!
