Coco Gauff Wins 4th Career Title At The Citi Open
Coco Gauff defeated Maria Sakkari in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to claim her 4th career title and her first title at the WTA 500 level at the Citi Open in Washington DC. This title is her second of the season after winning the Auckland Classic in January.
Gauff started off the match with a 3-0 lead but Sakkari was able to stay in the match by breaking back and holding at 2-3. However, Gauff proved too strong and saw another break of serve at 5-2 to clinch the first set. Sakkari had a great start in the second set leading 2-0, but Gauff broke back to even the game at 3-3 and then pulled ahead to seal the victory.
This victory is only Gauff’s second against the world no. 9 Sakkari. Gauff had lost both their meetings earlier this year. Sakkari still leads their head2head 4-2, and with a long career ahead for both players, we can expect more exciting matches to come.
Coco Gauff did not drop a set en route to the victory in this hard-court tournament. This is a true confidence booster for the 19-year-old after losing the first round at Wimbledon three weeks ago.
A new addition to Gauff’s coaching team has started on the right foot as she claims the title. Having added Pere Riba as her full-time coach and Brad Gilbert as a temporary consultant, Gauff’s game has already seen some improvements, especially in her forehand. The teenager is looking to keep this momentum going for the US Open.
