Novak Djokovic Regains Top Spot After US Open Triumph!
Novak Djokovic was crowned champion for the fourth time in Flushing Meadows at the US Open. Djokovic crushed Daniil Medvedev's dreams of a second Slam trophy in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6(5), 6-3.
This was a rematch of the 2021 US Open finals where Medvedev won in straight sets against Djokovic, denying him of the calendar slam that year.
They started the match off with a 19-shot rally. However, errors from Medvedev started to pile up as Djokovic broke and held for a 3-0 lead in the first. Medvedev was not able to keep up. In the second set, Medvedev found some rhythm and was able to hold to 6-5. With Djokovic serving to stay in the match, he had a chance to make a passing shot to close out the set. Medvedev did not manage to and ended up playing a tie-break, which he lost. The third set was less than ideal for Medvedev as he got broken early and the rest was history.
The win at the US Open this year gives Djokovic his record-extending 24th Grand Slam title and his third Slam of the year. Unfortunately, for him, he was not able to achieve the calendar slam yet again as he came out short in the finals against Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon. Djokovic will be looking to end his season as the year-end No. 1 for the eighth time in his career. Though he had not played many matches this year, he managed to rack up enough wins to put himself on top of the live ATP Race to Turin.
Novak Djokovic also became the only man to have won each slam at least 4 times. He once again proved that age is just a number, playing at such a high level and yet winning against much younger players. I wonder how far he can go.
