Jelena Ostapenko Upsets Iga Swiatek at the US Open
The defending champion and top seed Iga Swiatek crashed out of the US Open as Jelena Ostapenko came back from a set down to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in their fourth round clash. Jelena Ostapenko continues to hold a perfect record against Iga Swiatek, and she now leads Swiatek 4-0 on their head to head records and will play the quarterfinals at the Flushing Meadows for the first time in her career.
Things were looking great for Iga Swiatek at the start of the match, as she claimed the first set without huge setbacks. However, Ostapenko cranked up her gear, following her plan to always hit as hard as possible and brought her a 3-0 lead in the second set and by the third set the Latvian was unstoppable, breaking Iga 3 times in a row to lead the score 5-0.
The Latvian ended Iga Swiatek's impressive 75-week run as the top female player on tour - being unable to defend her title at the US Open meant losing the top spot on the WTA Tour. Current World no. 2 Aryna Sabalenka who won her first Slam earlier this year at the Australian Open will overtake Iga Swiatek on the rankings after the US Open as she prevails at the final Slam of the year.
Jelena Ostapenko sets up a quarterfinal clash against American Coco Gauff. The match will be their 3rd meeting on tour and they are tied in their head to head meetings. We expect nothing less than an amazing match between the two. It is also confirmed that with the exit of Iga Swiatek, there will be a first-time US Open women's champion as no one remaining in the the draw has won it before. More exciting matches to come as we enter week 2 of the US Open!
