Iga Swiatek Wins Roland Garros For The Fourth Time

World Number 1 Iga Swiatek is a champion at Roland Garros for the fourth time in Paris. Swiatek, after surviving a second round scare against Naomi Osaka, cruised past her opponents in her next rounds, dropping just 17 games en-route to the title after saving those match points. In the finals, Iga Swiatek dismantled the inspired Italian, Jasmine Paolini, in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 in an hour and 8 minutes to lift the French Open Title for the third consecutive year.

The Italian broke Swiatek’s serve early in the first set to lead 2-1. However, she proved to be no match against the Pole as Swiatek broke back immediately. Thereafter, Swiatek just rode on her momentum, playing her own game and claimed the first set 6-2 in 38 minutes. The Pole kept up with her game in the second and led 5-0. Paolini barely escaped the bagel before Swiatek served out the match to win 6-1 in the second.

Regardless of the results, it was a fantastic run for the number 12 seed Italian. Making her mark at 28 years old, Paolini will move up to a career-high ranking of world number 7 as the rankings refreshes on Monday. Paolini also made the finals in the women’s doubles with compatriot and former Roland Garros runner-up Sarah Errani, and they are looking to win the maiden Grand Slam title as partners.

Iga Swiatek continues to prove her dominance on the women’s tour, especially on clay. This win marks her fifth Grand Slam victory in her rather short professional career. No easy feat for the world number 1 to have remained consistent on tour for the last five years. She extends her win streak to 21 matches on the Paris clay, and remains the player to beat on the women’s tour. Swiatek will be looking to bring the momentum into the grass court season as she has not gotten ideal results on that surface.
