Alexei Popyrin Hits Past Sebastian Korda For His Maiden Masters 1000 Final
Australian Alexei Popyrin had to play 2 matches in the same day to secure his maiden Masters 1000 Final spot at the Canadian Open in Montreal. He defeated fourth seed Hubert Hurkazc in 2 hours and 47 minutes in the morning and came back in the evening for the semifinal to beat Sebastian Korda in straight sets 7-6(0), 6-3 in an hour and 31 minutes.
Popyrin started out slow in the first set, losing an early break to Korda; however, the American was unable to capitalize and allowed him back into the set after a loose service game. Popyrin was a new person on-court in the tie-break as he bageled the American to take the first set. The momentum shifted as Korda was unable to keep himself together. It was a tough couple of days for the players as rain delays pushed them to play two matches in the same day.
It was a good win for Popyrin as he defeated the newly crowned D.C Champion to secure a chance to win the biggest title of his career. The Australian is a massive underdog on the tour, with a couple of good wins against higher ranked players at this event. He will look to defeat fifth seed Andrey Rublev in the final tomorrow. The Australian moved up 32 spots on the PIF ATP Live Rankings and sits at a career-high ranking of number 30. He will move up a couple more spots if he manages to capture the title tomorrow.
