Canada Wins Davis Cup For The First Time Ever!

Team Canada became the Davis Cup Champion for the first time since their first appearance in 1913. The winning team consists of Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov, Vasek Pospisil, Alexis Galarneau and Gabriel Diallo, led by Frank Dancevic. Before becoming champions at the event this year, the closest they have come was in 2019 when they lost to Spain in the finals in Madrid.

In the finals they were up against Australia, who were playing for their 29th Davis Cup title. Unfortunately, for Australia, this time Team Canada came up on top and snagged the trophy.

Team Canada went all out and sent their top 2 players to play for the title. Current world no. 18 Denis Shapovalov went up against Thanasi Kokkinakis and defeated him in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Then, to seal the deal, the current world no. 6 Felix Auger-Aliassime dispatched Australian no. 1 Alex de Minaur also in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. It was a fairly straightforward win for the Canadians as they breezed through the two games.

It was an emotional day for the Canadians as they were inching closer to the trophy over the years but were never able to clinch it. The win was rather unexpected as they were actually dispatched earlier in March at the qualifiers, having lost 4-0 against Netherlands. However, in a dramatic turn of events they were given a pass when the highest-ranked country, Russia, was ejected from the event following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Canadian team worked their way through the matches with their top two players in the team, surviving the elimination rounds, making it to the top eight, defeating Germany in the quarterfinals, Italy in the semifinals, and finally Australia for the win!
