Major Upset at Poland Open
On 29 July at the Poland Open in Warsaw the crowd favourite & WTA world ranked no. 1 Iga Swiatek failed to advance to the semifinals against former world no. 4 Frenchwomen Caroline Garcia. It was a huge upset as Iga Swiatek is Polish and the top seed running for the title.
They played the quarterfinal round for 2 hours and 16 minutes. Caroline Garcia got the better of Iga Swiatek after playing 3 full sets, 6-1,1-6, 6-4. This was Caroline's 17th career top 10 win and her first win against the reigning world no. 1, breaking Iga’s 18th winning streak on clay.
Things have been looking great for Caroline Garcia as she had been on a roll since winning the doubles title at Roland Garros earlier this year and she has won 16 out of her last 19 matches starting from Bad Homburg Open just before Wimbledon. She is in the running for the Poland title at the finals against Romanian Ana Bogdan.
Even though Iga lost against Garcia at the quarterfinals, she still produced phenomenal results this year, attaining a win-loss record of 48-5 and winning 6 titles including a Grand Slam (Roland Garros), 4 WTA 1000s & 1 WTA 500. Caroline Garcia is only the 5th person to have won against her this year!
May Iga Swiatek and Caroline Garcia continue to put out their best tennis in the future tournaments!
