Alcaraz Sets Up A Rematch With Alexander Zverev In Madrid
Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Averev both suffered an opening round scare, before coming back from a first-set loss to advance to round 3 in Madrid. Alexander Zverev survived the opening round against Roberto Carballes Baena in 3 sets 6-7(8), 7-5, 6-0. Carlos Alcaraz also survived the opening round against Emil Ruusuvuori in 3 sets 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Zverev then cruised past the French qualifier Hugo Grenier in 55 minutes in a near-perfect 2 sets 6-1, 6-0 in round 3. Then, Alcaraz eased past Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 to set up a rematch of last year’s final against Zverev on Madrid’s clay where Alcaraz claimed the win.
Zverev currently leads their Head2Head 3-1, winning their most recent meeting at the quarters of the French Open last year in 4-sets before suffering the horrible injury whilst playing Nadal in the semifinals.
Alcaraz is looking to extend his win streak to 21 on the Spanish soil and claim the Madrid title to complete the Barcelona-Madrid double for the second straight season after retaining the title at the Barcelona ATP 500 last Sunday. The win for Alcaraz will not come easy as Zverev stands in the way in round 4.
Zverev is gaining momentum and playing better tennis after coming back from the injury and is looking to claim his 20th tour-level title and a third Madrid title. Zverev always excelled on the Madrid clay reaching at least the quarterfinals in his last 5 appearances and lifting the title twice at the event.
We can most definitely expect a mouth-watering round 4 match between Carlitos and Sascha on Tuesday!
