Jannik Sinner Overcomes Hurkacz To Become A Champion In Halle
The newly crowned World Number 1, Jannik Sinner, continues to dominate the sport as he defeated his doubles partner and former Halle Champion Hubert Hurkacz in two tight sets 7-6(8), 7-6(2) in an hour and 49 minutes. Sinner now pulls ahead in the Lexus Head2Head meeting to lead Hurkacz 3-2.
Sinner did not have it easy en-route to the final. His opponents were tough to play, and he had to play three 3-sets matches before the straight sets win against Zhang Zhizhen, who played really well in the semifinals. Hurkacz came through the previous rounds without dropping a set but played at least 1 tie-break in each of the previous rounds.
A tight final between the top and fifth seed was expected and they delivered.
There was really nothing much that separated both players in the match considering how both held serve and pushed both sets to tie-breaks. The scales visibly tipped towards Sinner in the second set as Hurkacz seemed unsettled in the rallies, dropping his first-serve percentage slightly. Despite the pressure, the Pole managed to keep the Italian at bay to push the match into the second tie-break. Unfortunately for Hubi, Sinner started off really strong and gained a mini-break to lead 3-1 in the tie-break and sealed the deal after a final backhand from the Pole that went long.
The win marks Sinner’s 14th career title, fourth title of the season, first title on grass and first as the World No. 1. He now boasts an incredible win-loss record of 38-3 this season, winning 92% of the matches he played. He will be the top seed going into Wimbledon and is the favourite to win the tournament, more so now that he has won a title on grass right before the Slam.
Hubert Hurkacz has had a pretty good season himself, boasting a win-loss record of 34-13 and will be moving up to a career high ranking of 7 on Monday. He is comfortable on grass with his high quality serves and movement. He will at most be seeded number 7 going into Wimbledon and is also one of the top contenders to win the event this year.
